Kaiku est une performance rassemblant la pianiste Betty Hovette et la plasticienne Eveliina Laitinen, où musique improvisée et arts visuels dialoguent pour évoquer les états d'âme de l’eau.

Kaiku, qui signifie « écho » en finnois, est la rencontre immersive de deux univers artistiques : l'image et le son. Le duo tisse un dialogue organique où chaque geste visuel répond à une vibration sonore, dans un jeu subtil de reflets et de miroirs. Les deux artistes nous invitent à un voyage poétique mêlant la peinture en direct sur des tissus suspendus et les paysages sonores minimalistes.

Sur le quai, on assiste à une métamorphose : le cadre du piano incarne la coque d'une embarcation de cordes sonores, tandis que des voiles blanches, capturent le souffle du vent et deviennent le canevas pour la mer. Deux femmes, une peintre et une musicienne, évoquent les flots de la mer et ses humeurs. Elles nous embarquent dans une traversée intérieure au bord d'un nid flottant, où chaque trait et chaque son raconte un fragment de l'océan.

La performance Kaiku a été initiée dans le cadre du projet de territoire Court-Circuit. Une production du collectif Freddy Morezon, soutenue par la préfecture de la Haute-Garonne.

Tribute to Don Pullen

For In Spirit, Don Pullen embodies a kind of ideal. We refuse to be pigeonholed into stylistic 'boxes'. Jazz, popular music, contemporary music, written music, improvised music, blues, European music or American music?
Like Don Pullen, Betty Hovette, Sébastien Bacquias and Fabien Duscombs believe it is important to give free rein to one's artistic desires with total freedom of tone.
Don Pullen is a model, not an influence. The trio aims to take on the spirit rather than the letter — in other words, to follow his example of independence and artistic integrity rather than trying to copy this great pianist. Without depriving themselves of the opportunity to interpret some of his compositions in their own way, the three musicians present their own music, based on a strategy of waiting. Anchored in the moment. None of them knows in advance what the other two will play: Will it be a Don Pullen composition, another theme, free improvisation, a solo, a duo or a trio?
Each concert is a unique "organism" with its own life, impossible to reproduce at the next concert. The result is an electric energy that arouses the attention and senses of his audiences.

So is Don Pullen a model? More like a launching pad!

The times have changed. These days, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has already taken on such importance that even in the arts it is capable of replacing man. We can now have it write music in the style of Stravinsky, in the style of Bach's chorales, ask it to generate an improvisation in the spirit of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps", or even create its own original music. However, free improvisation is a domain that may well remain inaccessible to it, because behind the misnamed AI are - it should be remembered - programmers incapable of transcribing into computer code the fundamental qualities of free improvisation, at the heart of this recording: instinct, shared inspiration and genuine empathy.

Backed by these qualities, CiRuS ViRCuLe goes in search of the last unknown sonic territories with each of their performances. Betty Hovette and Laurent Paris are two "revelatory artists" in the sense that they continue to unearth untold treasures. To describe their music as "free improvisation" would be reductive, because their quest is less to find the freedom they already have than to get to the heart of the sound itself, to find the unhoped-for in what has finally happened. Far from the pre-organised, well beyond the accompanied melody and the traditional notion of harmony (without denying or discarding them altogether), these musicians of our time concentrate their creative efforts on creating unexpected textures or rhythmic phenomena outside tempo. There's a game of instrumental identity going on between them : who's playing what is one of the mysteries you'll enjoy listening to and you will enjoy these musical moments. The result is music that is never, ever directive. The incredible thing here lies precisely in the diversity of the feelings expressed/expressed, in the openness to other relationships to the world (than those some would like to impose on us), the flavour of which lies in the very uncertainty, somedelicious ambiguity.

Timeless music - possibly recorded as far back as prehistorictimes, as far back as the height of so-called contemporary' music - music of appearance - better still: of emergence!- The aim of its creators isn't so much an experiment, or a discovery of the newness, as the sheer pleasure of listening to sound(s). In other words, an antidote to the grandiloquence, therehashed, the foregone conclusions.
