Echos Festifs - janvier 2026 · novembre 2026

Franck Bergerot, Jazz Magazine
Lauren Kinsella sings folksongs from several ages, and has a powerful yet subtle way of shaping them, providing a framework around which the others can explore freely and go off on voyages of discovery. Kit Downes will always find the astonishing tone colours which lie dormant in an organ, either in a church or in this case a Hammond, and Robin Fincker a is subtle, inventive, thoughtful, classy player. There is already an album due out next spring on the Hungarian BMC label. I managed to blag a copy: it is a delight."
Sebastian Scotney, London Jazz News
The fruitful collaboration between French saxophonist and clarinetist Robin Fincker and British pianist Kit Downes goes back several decades. By creating Shadowlands with Irish singer — London-based — Lauren Kinsella, they came together with the intention of setting to music a blend of early music, forgotten poetry, folk traditions, and original compositions.
Following their first album, Ombres, released on BMC Records in March 2024, which introduced audiences to the trio’s ethereal and dreamlike sound — notably through their acclaimed interpretation of Death and the Lady — they now present their new project, Two Minds, scheduled for release on the 5th June 2026.
With Two Minds, Shadowlands continues its exploration of the connections between early and contemporary music, shedding light on lesser-known aspects of ancient songs while offering its own vision of a contemporary folk music infused with improvisation. For this new repertoire, the trio has refined its musical language and developed a strikingly clear yet free-flowing way of moving from one piece to another. Within this universe, traditional Sean-nós songs, poems by Emily Dickinson and W. B. Yeats, as well as a sacred work by Maurice Ravel, coexist alongside original compositions.
Beneath flickering light, Lauren Kinsella’s voice hovers like a planet around which saxophone and keyboards revolve and gravitate, creating music of timeless motion.

Facteur Sauvage (Augmented) is an electric animal, made to blend sweat and poetry. The quintet draws on a raw sound mixing primitive rock and alternative blues. The two horns that have joined the original trio both bolster its relentless riffs and unleash wild improvisations.
Whatever ground they choose to explore, these five musicians bring with them a wealth of diverse experience from the independent scene, whether rooted in garage rock, free jazz or spoken word. Sung, chanted, recited or whispered, the words conjure up Anglo-Saxon imagery alongside poems delivered in their original French. Language takes its place at the table, in barns and clubs where the lines between a dance-driven set and poetry made for listening are joyfully blurred.
Facteur Sauvage (Augmented) seeks meaning through literature made flesh, propelled by bass guitar, prepared drums and blasts of breath, all moving as one — radically raw and radically tender.
“Don’t fall asleep until you’re dead,” went the original motto. “And don’t look back: we are she-wolves and wolves, hungry for love.”
The quintet is on a sonic mission. Come Together. Stand Our Ground. Make Sense. Nothing is left to the disenchanted slumber of the world. Everything is a matter of shoulders and vertebral harmonies. We remain ghosts at full gallop amid the ruins, somewhere between strength and tenderness.
Wildly raw. Wildly tender.

Jazz In

For In Spirit, Don Pullen embodies a kind of ideal. We refuse to be pigeonholed into stylistic 'boxes'. Jazz, popular music, contemporary music, written music, improvised music, blues, European music or American music?
Like Don Pullen, Betty Hovette, Sébastien Bacquias and Fabien Duscombs believe it is important to give free rein to one's artistic desires with total freedom of tone.
Don Pullen is a model, not an influence. The trio aims to take on the spirit rather than the letter — in other words, to follow his example of independence and artistic integrity rather than trying to copy this great pianist. Without depriving themselves of the opportunity to interpret some of his compositions in their own way, the three musicians present their own music, based on a strategy of waiting. Anchored in the moment. None of them knows in advance what the other two will play: Will it be a Don Pullen composition, another theme, free improvisation, a solo, a duo or a trio?
Each concert is a unique "organism" with its own life, impossible to reproduce at the next concert. The result is an electric energy that arouses the attention and senses of his audiences.
So is Don Pullen a model? More like a launching pad!

One day, in 2018, Didier Lasserre and Christine Wodrascka found themselves in the transatlantic project THE BRIDGE, in a Franco-American free jazz or improvised music quintet, "les Minuscules Sangliers", with Keefe Jackson, Dave Rempis and Peter Orins.
On a three-week tour of France, Didier L and Christine W had the opportunity to observe each other, to cross-fertilise their music and even to confront each other. They found more than just an affinity! The rhythm and all its secrets, the sound and all its richness, the energy and all its nuances, they enjoy it, have fun with it, seriously, in total freedom.
Another day, in 2021, Didier creates a septet project, 'Silence was pleased' - Didier Lasserre, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Gaël Mevel, Denis Cointe, Laurent Cerciat, Christine Wodrascka, Benjamin Bondonneau, Loïc Lachaize. Here, Didier creates a kind of itinerary made up of different encounters with very different colours: a beautiful poetic moment. A stop is planned at a bend in the road: Didier L and Ch W play as a duo. It's as good as it gets at any performance.
It was here that the duo of Didier Lasserre, drums, and Christine Wodrascka, piano, was born. The recording 'Lupercales 1' proves that this step was taken. Their true roots lie in free jazz. Complemented by contemporary music in all its forms. Together, behind their instruments, they like to surprise each other, support each other, confuse each other, contradict each other, let themselves float in the space of sound, gradually building a furrow, digging, insisting, repeating, playing with full or empty, silence or power, black or white.
An obvious duo in their genre.
An invisible score, a sheet of blackened, perforated, striped graph paper,
a canvas of rhythms conceived by three in tight stitches,
a harmony of a single stroke, a pure sprint,
Christine Wodrascka & Didier Lasserre play out their presence in reality and the reality of their presence.
For free? Of course, they have paid their respects... to history, to what we call memory, and also to expectation.
But make no mistake: this is more than just a way out, it is about freedom.
Denis Cointe is currently working on a documentary about improvised music, in particular with Didier Lasserre and Christine Wodrascka.
It is being produced by the Atelier documentaire.
